Remember Hugh Jackman’s film Real Steel, which was a live-action remake of the popular toy game Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots?
Well, Hollywood still seems to think that’s a good idea because Universal and Mattel have made Vin Diesel star a movie from Rock ‘Em Sock’ Em Robots, which is about family in accordance with the fast and furious Diesel ethos.
See, the script was written by Ryan Engle (Rampage), who follows a dad (not High Jackman), and son (not Dahota Goyo). Sound familiar?
It isn’t clear whether Diesel will play father, robot or character altogether, yet he’ll make the film under his One Race Films banner with his sister, Samantha Vincent, and Kevin McKeon’s will oversee Mattel’s project.
Though this does sound like an appropriate vehicle for Diesel, it also feels like something of a cruel joke, since this property obviously should’ve gone to Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock.
There is endless branding potential. So The Rock did the project go ahead? Did Diesel cut his fee just get his hands on this property to hold him on to his quick and angry co-star, with whom he feuded notoriously?
Could they rejoin, with DJ playing one of the combat robots somehow? There are so many questions, all tongue-in-cheek questions. Why?
In my opinion, the movie Godzilla vs. kong/pacific rim looks like yet another disappointing one, but robots instead of kaiju and vin diesel rather than rock are waiting for them.
Yawn! Everyone else seemed enthusiastic about the match in movie skies, but Mattel can wake me when Barbie hops on her way to her dream home in a robbed pink hot wheels wagon and a magic eight ball in her pocket.
